Rnd 5: In each ch-3 loop, work (sl st, ch 2, 2 tr, ch 2, sl st). (16 larger petals) Fasten off yellow.

Granny Square Border

Rnd 6: Join green. *Ch 4, sc between the next 2 petals.* Repeat * to * around, placing (ch 4, sc, ch 4) at 4 evenly spaced points to define the square corners.

Rnds 7–10: Continue in traditional granny square fashion with green yarn. Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner ch-2 sp and (3 dc) in each side ch-1 sp between clusters. Each completed square should measure approximately 13″ x 13″ after Rnd 10.

Assembly

Hold the two sunflower squares with wrong sides together. Join green yarn and sc through both layers along 3 sides (bottom and both sides), leaving the top open.

Side Gusset (optional for a boxier shape)

Ch 9. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (8 sc)

Work in rows of sc until the strip is long enough to go along the bottom and both sides of the bag. Sew the gusset between the two panels.

Handles (make 2)

With green, ch 60 (or desired length). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (59 sc)

Rows 2–4: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across.

Fasten off. Sew handles securely to the inside of the bag, approximately 3″ from each side edge.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. For extra durability and structure, sew a fabric lining inside the bag. Block the sunflower squares before assembly for the best results.

Tips

This tote makes an incredible gift for gardeners, teachers, or anyone who loves a bit of floral charm. You can also adjust the square size by adding or removing granny rounds to make a smaller clutch or a larger beach bag!
