Materials Needed

  • DK weight cotton yarn – approximately 250 yards
  • 5mm (H) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Finished Dimensions

Approximately 14″ wide x 15″ tall (excluding handles)

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space

Pattern Instructions

Base (worked in the round)

Rnd 1: Ch 20. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Work 3 sc in the last ch. Continuing along the opposite side of the foundation chain, sc in each ch across. Work 3 sc in the last ch. Sl st to join. (42)

Rnds 2–5: Continue working in an oval shape, increasing at each end by placing 2 sc in each of the 3 center stitches on both short sides. The base should measure approximately 4″ x 8″.

Sides (mesh pattern)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Do NOT join. Begin working in continuous rounds or join each round. (approximately 58 sts)

Rnd 7: Ch 5, skip 2 sts, sc in next st. *Ch 5, skip 2 sts, sc in next st.* Repeat * to * around. Sl st to join.

Rnds 8–25: Sl st into the first ch-5 space. *Ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp.* Repeat * to * around. Sl st to join.

Top Edge

Rnd 26: Ch 1. Work 3 sc in each ch-5 space around. Sl st to join.

Rnd 27: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st to join.

Handles (make 2)

Identify two points on opposite sides of the bag opening, each approximately 3″ wide.

Row 1: Join yarn, ch 1, sc in the next 6 sts. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 3–40: Repeat Row 2 (or until handle measures approximately 14″).

Fasten off and sew the end of the handle strap to the corresponding spot on the opposite side. Repeat for the second handle.

Tips

Use 100% cotton yarn for best durability. Try making multiple bags in different colors for different shopping purposes. This pattern also makes a wonderful beach bag or library tote!
